Architecture 2030; 2030 Palette

Free AIA Continuing Education course

INTRODUCTION

In the built world, buildings generate nearly 40% of annual global GHG emissions, with facades accounting for over half of a building’s energy use.

International organizations such as Architecture2030 and 2030 Palette have been created to provide resources to architects and designers adhering to Architecture2030’s zero-carbon challenge. The 2030 Palette provides a highly visual and accessible online platform that meets the “how to” needs of architects, designers, engineers and planners. As a resource, 2030 Palette generates localized and decarbonized built environments worldwide.

By adhering to guidance on building facades, shading and side daylighting, FenestraPro can apply 2030 Palette recommendations using real-time data calculations, rather than just estimations like other building analysis software.

In collaboration with Architecture 2030 and 2030 Palette, FenestraPro has launched a free AIA course on how 2030 Palette passive design strategies can be applied through the Revit environment. The course learning objectives include:

  • Understanding the impacts of existing building facades and the need to design new buildings that are adaptive and resilient to transform our built environment.
  • Identifying the benefits of passive design strategies relating to the façade.
  • Determining appropriate façade design strategies of the 2030 Palette to optimize building performance at differing stages of the architectural design process.
  • Utilizing building information modeling tools to understand the effects of these strategies in real-time.

As a preview to the course material, here is a glimpse of some of the passive design strategies that will be covered.

uTILIZING tHE bUILDING fACADE

FenestraPro Building Facade

As the façade acts as a moderator between the exterior and interior of a building, 2030 Palette uses the façade as a component of passive design strategies including passive cooling, shaded walls, and reflected daylighting.

FenestraPro, a design tool validated by 2030 Palette, has features such as the Facade Manager, Glazing Analysis Application and Glazing Database that focus directly on how a facade can be utilized to increase occupant comfort and mitigate project cost.

Optimizing The Façade For Energy Reduction In Existing Buildings

As the built environment is expected to account for a large percentage of global emissions, architects have an opportunity to revamp existing buildings for more energy-reduction. 2030 Palette provides swatches, or strategies, that will demonstrate how users can apply passive design strategies such as the use of external shading devices or side daylighting to mitigate energy use.

By reducing energy use in existing buildings, architects can mitigate some of the end-to-end energy use already existent in the built environment. These strategies are also applicable in early stages of design where architects, designers and engineers aim to meet 2030 Challenge targets.
